Mustard Seed Small Farm

Mustard Seed Small Farm began 4 years ago when we moved to Glenning Valley. We grow veggies, fruit & berries in our 400m2 veggie patch. We breed Nigerian Dwarf milking goats & raise heritage Buff Orpington chickens. We make our own compost on site using the 'waste' from our garden & animals, enriched with castings from our 2 IBC worm farms. We are also amateur beekeepers with 2 young European honeybee hives. If you decide to visit with us, you'll get a sense of what's possible to achieve on a small acreage in a few years, with very limited time & material resources.

Story

Mustard Seed Small Farm began 4 years ago when we moved to Glenning Valley. We grow veggies, fruit & berries in our 400m2 veggie patch. We breed Nigerian Dwarf milking goats & raise heritage Buff Orpington chickens. We make our own compost on site using the ‘waste’ from our garden & animals, enriched with castings from our 2 IBC worm farms. We are also amateur beekeepers with 2 young European honeybee hives.

We value diversity on our property & have a wide range of herbs, flowers, fruits & veggies growing at all times: both annuals & perennials. Most of the perennials were shared with us by other generous Permie folk around the Coast. We propagate this diverse range of plants & are slowly filling out our gardens with lavender, rosemary, arrowroot, perennial basil, salvia, berries, turmeric, ginger, sweet potato & a host of other delicious edibles. Most of the garden structures at Mustard Seed were built with reclaimed materials.

We’ve started removing invasive species from the perimeter gardens that separate the property from the road, allowing the native trees to reclaim the upper stories of this space, & planting other natives & edibles in the understory.

If you decide to visit with us, you’ll get a sense of what’s possible to achieve on a small acreage in a few years, with very limited time & material resources. You’ll also get some ideas on how to integrate animals into a permaculture system.

Safety

On-street parking is available; the garden is a near-level walk from the roadside. Mind any trip hazards (mostly plants & chickens).
