Pickles Patch is an average size rental residential property employing Permaculture principles to grow healthy food and medicinal plants on a tight budget.
Pickles Patch is a permaculture garden that is used to grow organic food and medicinal plants. It is restricted by being a small rental yard and also being on a tight budget. We use both conventional inground and also aquaponic methods, and often yield excess to our needs.
When we moved here, the backyard was overgrown with weeds and the soil very depleted. It took several months and a chainsaw to reach the back fence. Once we did, we discovered the remains of veggie gardens that long ago someone had taken great pride in. The soil and beds were re-established and restored using natural composting, worm introduction and mulching and are now back to their former glory.
Our garden now also includes chickens, quail, fish, crayfish and mushroom cultivation. It is ever changing and evolving as we experiment with new plants and techniques. Pickles Patch grows food and medicinal plants and we make our own medicinal tinctures. We also forage our local area and make fruit liquors from safe sourced local ‘wild’ fruit.
If you don’t think you have the space, permanence or budget please visit and ask us how we did it.
