Ukuzala

Showcases a large mandala garden and extensive food forest – both only three years old but very productive and extremely attractive. Produce from the mandala garden is regularly donated to community organisations. A huge flowing pond increases biodiversity and creates habitat for the local wildlife.

Story

At just over 3 years old this garden is a great example of a dream turned reality through family and community. Ukuzala is a small acreage in Killcare Heights, cared for by a team of passionate, like-minded people on a journey to create, grow, learn and assist.

Working within permaculture principles the garden features a 14m diameter mandala garden created in August 2020 with the main purpose of growing produce to donate to a local community kitchen. With successes and challenges, the team never stops moving forward, implementing new ideas and creating new systems.

We are continuing to enhance and extend the bountiful food forest and slowly reducing the lawn area. Look out for the banana circle, beneficial plantings, a huge pond that has increased biodiversity across the site, and the bush regeneration happening in the wooded areas of the property.

We are continually focusing on improving the soil naturally and use what is on site as much as possible. We also collect food scraps from local grocers weekly, using it to make hot and cold compost and saving it from going to landfill.

Ukuzala will be open Sunday 9.30 – 4pm, with the Ukuzala Espresso Bar selling coffee to visitors, and our own specialty coffee roasted onsite. There will be filtered water onsite. BYO water bottle. Keep cups encouraged!
